The library media program enables individuals to become information literate and effective lifelong readers. The program provides educational and technological opportunities to students and staff in keeping with their needs and abilities. The program will enable individuals to access, analyze, assimilate, and use information effectively.
Collins Elementary’s Media Center is an integral part of the instructional program. Teachers, students, administrators, and library personnel work together to provide the entire school community with readily available learning resources. All types of media can be integrated into the objectives of the school’s instructional program. The responsibilities of the library media specialist include the instructing of library skills, supervising and promoting reading, assisting with research projects, maintaining the collection and coordinating volunteers. For further information about the library media center you may go to the Parent's Guide.
Technology is used effectively in the library media center for search, research, taking quizzes, and personal use. All computers in the library media center are for student use for selecting reading material, projects, researching reference materials, and providing on-line access to the Internet and especially the Alabama Virtual Library(AVL). Technology provides easy access in selecting books in the library collection. Networking capabilities make the library media center access easier for the benefit of students, as well as faculty and staff in lesson planning and preparation.
Special events are held throughout the school year in the library media center. Events include: Book Fairs, celebrating authors, Family Read Night, Family Math Night, and Read Across America Day. There is always something going on @ your library media center!
You no longer need an Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) card to access the website from home. If you are in the state of Alabama you only need to go to the website. It is absolutely FREE (funded by the state of Alabama) and gives you access to a wealth of information (including encyclopedias) on just about any topic that might interest your child or you. The AVL has a new webpage. This link will take you to the website.
